Toronto FanExpo/ Festival of Fear 2011

It was a fantastic time as always and because I was so inspired by all the fans and creative types on Artist Alley, I was able to turn out some really fun drawings. I also came home with a whole notepad of ideas that I plan to turn into illustrations this season and for a little sneak peek.....it will include ThunderCats and Ghostbusters!

2011 Women in Horror Contest WINNER!

We have a winner!!

Jennifer M Emailed BJ-C this response to our question,

"who is your favorite Women in Horror and Why?"

And won herself a print of my Camile Keaton tribute illustration.

My favorite Woman in Horror is Camille Keaton.

The reason is I saw I Spit on Your Grave when I was 16 (I am now 38) all because my mom saw the video at our local store and thought it would be right up my alley. I thank my mother to this day for renting me that movie. Camille's performance was incredible and it has gotten me to track down her other movies. There is nobody who could have played that character like her. I am still waiting to get to meet her at one of the Chiller conventions here in Jersey. I have missed her every time. This movie and her character Jennifer Hills had a huge impact on my life.

2011 is here, and I have a lot to do!

Hey all,

After a month hiatus it feels good to be back on the Blog again. I have a lot I want accomplish this year and with the birth of my third child just around he corner, this year will be as crazy as ever!

I will still be selling Prints, Custom Zombie portraits, and Custom Cthu-You's at my Etsy Store

I will continue to work on my Classic Monster Tribute Illustrations ( these will be available as prints by spring)

I will be finishing off a few tribute pieces ( I just Tweeted a Sneek Peek of my Tim Burton Zombie)

And the BIG project is my collected works art book. This will be a hard cover coffee table book that will collect my favourite pieces of work from all of my series. It will also have never before seen illustrations, sketches and drawings that have never been available for sale. I am extremely excited about this project and I cant wait to share it with all of you.

On a personal note, I plan to watch more movies, read more StarWars novels ( I just bought 4 new ones yesterday) and continue to cheer for the Toronto Maple Leafs!

I cant wait to kick 2011 into high gear and I hope you all come along for the ride,

Classic Monster Sneak Peek

Where did it all begin for me, I know I've said it a 1000 times that it was Return of the living Dead and soon after Night of the Living Dead. that has a special spot in my heart.But that's where my love of ZomBies started. My love for Monsters began long before that, It actually started when I was 7 or 8 and one of our local cable stations was airing the original Karloff Frankenstein, and
The Creature from the Black Lagoon on Halloween. It was months later that My day and I watched The Day The Earth Stood Still together, but the damage was done. I was in love with Monsters and there was no turning back. I have always loved working with the classic Monster theme, I touched on it quite a bit 3 years ago with my Classic Monster ZomBears, but this my real chance to pay tribute to he Monster of the 30's, 40's and 50's. Here in this post is just a sneak peek of three of the Monsters that I am currently working on. Over the next few weeks I will reveal them as I complete them, and next year they will be showcased in my collected works book "their coming to get you" ( working title) I hope you enjoy this little teaser, and stay tuned for more.

Gwar At the Toronto Zombie Walk

Toronto 2010 Fan Expo pt.1: Friends and Fiends

So the 2010 Toronto FanExpo has come and gone and as per usual I would like to offer you all a photo diary/ re-cap of my Killer Weekend!

Meeting Ghoulish Gary Pullin was a wonderful treat.He is a HUGE influence for me and a big reason why I push myself so hard to offer up the best art every time. Gary has set the bar for horror art, and I reach for it with every drawing. I even had a chance to give him the ZomBie portrait I painted of him ( see next photo) It was great to spend some time at the RueMorgue booth and to chat with an Icon.

Another real treat for me was meeting Lloyd kaufman. and see him. When I did he remembered me, gave me a hug and Lloyd has entertained me so much over the years that I decided to draw a Llloyd/Toxic Avenger piece. I sent him a TwittPic before the show and told him I was going to drop by his boothautographed my illustration. I can die happy now.

I got a double dose of RueMorgue this weekend, I had also drawn a ZomBie portrait for the host of RueMorgue Radio, Tomb Dragomir. It was nice to meet him in person and chat for a bit. He actually saw me going up the escalator wearing my Bloody Mary T-shirt. ( that was a great investment) Tomb is a GREAT guy and it was a blast to do his portrait. Check him out at RueMorgue Radio.

I ran into, and was almost devoured by my friend Thea from the Toronto Zombie Walk. rather than take a bite out of me and turn me into one of the undead, she posed for a picture of her and her portrait.

Tales of Woe pt 2

Hey kids,

so I had a chance to read Tales of Woe by John Reed this weekend and it is just Fantastic! This is the macabre at it's finest. John retells these horribly wonderful tales of woe in novella form so it's great to pick up and read a few tales without feeling like your committed to a whole chapter. Truth is, the tales are so captivating you wont be able to read just a few tales and put it down. I was halfway through the book before I noticed how much I had read. Each Tales is accompanied by wonderful illustrations, by a horde of different artists, all in different styles and mediums. Without sounding biased, these illustrations really enhance the over all experience and truly make this a must have for your book shelf.

Tales of Woe Part one.

Fictionaut loves it LOVES IT when our fair Fictionauters fare well. John Reed, our own, and our own fiction provocateur, is soon to release his first non-fiction title, Tales of Woe, and it is foul. True stories without any redeeming character whatsoever—just bleak, bleak, unremitting, and undeserved. Printed on black paper, with fifty pages of full color art .

Q (Nicolle Elizabeth for Fictionaut): Hi John Reed, thanks for making time for us over at ye olde Fictionaut. Your newest work Tales of Woe (site), forthcoming from MTV Press in August, is comprised of flash pieces interwoven in their gloom, but mostly, interwoven in their deep understanding of and insight into humanity. Woe has us feeling that sometimes, things can turn for the worse, the awful, that there is something wrong with everybody. You can explain it better than I can. What’s the book about?

A (John Reed): Tales of Woe chronicles stories of pointless suffering. Undeserved suffering. Not a thread of silver lining.

Are all of the pieces entirely fiction or are they based in fact? Did a man actually attempt to have sex with a bicycle?

Totally true.

Did you choose the illustrators?

Jacob Hoye, my editor, and Walter Einenkel, the designer, also contributed an enormously to that process. But, yes, I worked with and chose the illustrators. We looked at many, many artists for Woe, and after a while we had a sense of the Woe aesthetic, which isn’t stylistic so much as characteristic. We wanted a wide spread of indy comix type artists—but all of them had to have the quality of fine art, not just graphic art, and all of them had to be “Woe.”

Some of the images got more direction than others.

Why black paper? Was it difficult to work with?

The black paper felt most appropriate, and with current printing and software capabilities, it’s more possible than it used to be. But yes, it was really difficult. It fought us every step of the way. The manuscript costs a hundred bucks to print on an inkjet.

Why (if you do) do you feel the book will speak to flash fiction, short fiction writers, poets and novelists who don’t normally read fables, Edward Gorey-esque works and etc? (I think it will, by the way.)

Catharsis, until recently, was a process by which you watched someone else suffer, and then felt better for it. That, I think, is the appeal (if there is one, we’ll see). That’s the humor as well, gallows/journalist humor.

I thought the project was going to be much easier to work on than it was. The stories didn’t get easier to write; they got harder to write. The more I time I invested in these horrendously upsetting tragedies, the more depressing the material became. I’d expected myself to harden to the stories: not the case. But I did become a better person for working on Woe; how could I not be more appreciative of my own life and loved ones? So, of course, it’s easy to criticize Woe as a freakshow/car-wreck attraction, but the stories in Woe, for me at least, offered something else: a broader perspective on living.

What was the process in working on Woe like? Did you ever find yourself feeling depressed in general from the subject matter?

Some of the stories make me feel sick, even as I write this sentence. They are truly awful.

Were there any extra tales which didn’t make it into the final manuscript?

We cut some material: some text, several images, and one full story. Self-censorship? Maybe. But some of Woe is pretty difficult to live with as is.

Why so much Sarah Palin?

Believe it or not, those centerfolds are not extraneous. I started thinking about Palin before she was a VP candidate. In researching Woe, there were three types of stories that I had to quit using, because they were too easy to find. First: stories about animals. Second: stories about children. Third: stories set in Alaska. We had enough Alaska stories to fill the whole book.

Return of the Living Tedd

Good afternoon boys and ghouls,

Today is a pretty special day for The Day After. It has been over 12 months since my last ZomBear was drawn And with a chance meeting with a fellow Canadian zombie artist, and a true belief that I could bring something different to the Walking Tedd, I have come back to the Deaddy Bears Picnic to draw them in their natural habitat once again.
After a lengthy chat with Byron from
I Draw Zombies I found a real desire to go back to the Bears that gave....Re-Birth to this entire Blog. Byron had the idea to do a collaboration illustration using the ZomBears, and with a little back and forth brainstorming we came to this. We will each draw our " ZomBear Horde" on 11" x 14" paper and mail each other our drawings. We will then paint each others halves, scan them, and join them together in PhotoShop to create one complete painting. The end result is a bit of an optical illusion, you will see one complete painting but finished in two completely different styles. I am beyond stokked to show off the ZomBears in a fresh, (well...as fresh as the Un-Tedd can get ) new light. I hope you are all as excited as I am.
What you see her is the beginning stages of the iDrawZombies/The Day After, Zombear Collaboration.

An Evening with The Misfits

This Thursday June 17th, 2010 I had the pleasure of seeing The Misfits in concert ( for the 2nd time) and not only was the the show fantastic, I was able to spend a moment with the front man himself, Jerry Only. I had meet Jerry last year and had him, Dez, and Robo sign my coffin box set. But this time was special, this time he autographed a Zombie Portrait I had drawn of him. He really liked it and a friend of mine ( who has known Jerry for years) is going to get him a print of his very own. For anyone new to my work, I love zombies, things that go bump in the night and ketchup chips. I am also a staunch Atheist and am happy to be living in a country that allows my (some may say) blasphemous expression. I grew up in a Catholic household and was spoon fed sugar coated shit until I was 13, then a light went on. Not all of my work, but a fair amount is religious themed, because I paint what I know. Now, taking Jesus Christ and the "Resurrection" story in it's literal form would make Jesus the most famous zombie. Take my love for the undead and (on some level) my desire to throw rocks at the hornets nest that is the Catholic church, creates a wonderful series I call "God is Dead" But I digress, the reason for my post tonight has nothing to do with me and EVERYTHING to do with B-Sol from the Vault of Horror. B has put up a post mixing my two favourite themes Religion and Zombies and has created what I feel is his "Tom Sawyer" This is a wonderful, thought provoking and entertaining piece of writing and I encourage everyone to leave my blog THIS INSTANT and check it out. You will not regret it.

For those of you who know me, my love for J-horror comes second only to zombies. To be honest Calling it J-horror isn't really accurate anymore. I love Korean and Tai films just as much. Lets say, " I love Asian films" and call it a day. My first experiences with an Asian film (and I believe, thanks to the American re-make machine a lot of our firsts) was The Ring. I actually saw the re-make first and GASP!! enjoyed it more. Ever since I first Samara I wanted to do an "homage portrait" so finally, after many years and even more nightmares, I give you Samara.

Last year we did a raffle for The Lynn Sage Foundation of Chicago. We ended up raising a lot of money for the organization, and we are planning something else for this one. This year we are doing a raffle and silent auction for our good friend Kreepylady Kristin. She recently came upon some real rough times, losing her job, massive amounts of surgery from a life threatening condition, and now racked up a HUGE amount of medical bills. Without her insurance, (the company she worked for over 9 years let her go), she is facing a huge uphill battle and struggling to pay off those bills. She has been through months of medical rehab and we are planning on helping her out! She has played a huge role in the Chicago Horror Community and with Horror Society as well, so we have gathered up some great items for the raffle and auction. All proceeds of this raffle and auction will be going directly to her medical bills.

You horror freaks are going to love some of the products we have for you to bid on, and this will be a great help to her and her family as well.

Hello boys and ghouls,

This is the first (of many) The Day After print giveaways. All you have to do to win a print every month is visit a blog of my choosing, read a post ( I will hyperlink to said post) come back here and answer a question regarding that blog. Simple enough?

I'm in Gothic Beauty Magazine!
To be published is an honor than not many get to have and in itself is special. But to be published in a magazine among your peers for doing what you love to do is an absolute honor. Today I officially have that honor as I hold a copy of Gothic Beauty issue # 30 in my hands and read page 58, an article written by the absolutely lovely Lorelie Burk about yours truly. A large part of what I do is because I want to entertain, scare and provoke thought. An now for the first time outside of my blog I am able to touch so many people, and this make me happy beyond words. I want to thank Lorelie and Gothic Beauty for allowing me to share my art with the world and to keep company with people who, like me, are just trying to give back to the community of the macabre, because it has given so much to us.

Family Portrait

I have been wanting to show this painting off for sometime now. I was contacted by my customer through my Etsy store and asked to paint a zombie family portrait for her anniversary. The final composition came from three photo's. 1) Dad and baby 2) mom, son and daughter and 3) Son and Daughter at (older). Not only did I put the two main photos together, but the children in the pose you see where not that age in the original photo. My client wanted that pose, but wanted her two children to reflect there current ages. This was a wonderfully fun painting to do and my client AND her husband love it. I am thrilled that I can now share it with the world.

Love is Gone

It has been a long time since I sat down to write a review, why? because so many others can write them better! So I'll keep this short. The new Dommin album finally hit the street last week and everyone should own it. It's beautiful, it's haunting it is my favourite album this year. It very rare that a band puts out an album that beginning to end is a jem, Love is Gone is just that. That last albums that I can say did this were TOOL's; 10,000 days, Pearl Jam's: 10, and Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream. You owe it to yourself to go get this album, you will not regret it!

Happy Monday Boys and Ghouls!

I would like to do something a little different today, I have a portrait I am currently working on, it is of a friend of mine and someone who you all know ( and if you don't, please go and introduce yourself) This portrait is of Iloz Zoc, leader of the League of Tana Tea Drinkers and shop keep at Zombos' closet of Horror. My "Undead Through Lead" is a never ending series of portraits. Portraits that I have been commissioned to draw, portraits of friends and family, and Portraits of those who inspire me. Zoc not only inspires me but is a very vocal supporter of The Day After and my work, and has done so on his own free will. I have had great Success in the first few years and owe have much of that success to Zoc. So, for this Undead Through Lead portrait I would like you to pay a visit to Zombos' Closet of Horror and check out the first stage illustration of Zoc, trademark turtlneck and enjoying a cup of Tana tea. Pet My Kitty

it has been a wonderful year and I thought I would start the 2010 blogging season off with a commission piece that I did for a Christmas gift last month. The recipient is a HUGE Hello Kitty fan and is the kind of gal that is open enough to display a request to "pet her kitty" on her wall. This was a departure from my usual Zombie/religious themed paintings but still was a fun piece to illustrate, and in the end, my client was thrilled to have a unique take on something she loves so dearly.

Merry christmas, God is Dead!

Tis the season to be scary....er, merry, and blaspheme. So I thought is was appropriate to release a painting from my "God is Dead" collection. Bloody Mary is a variant of the Zombie Virgin Mary that originally appeared in my Resurrection Set of illustrations. Those original 4 illustrations of Mary and Jesus will be partnered with a new set of illustrations to create the "God is Dead Collection"

I truly thank you for all of your support this year and will promise to provide entertaining illustrations and paintings in the new year. And if you bump into Santa on the 25th, with him a happy birthday for me!

Muertos: Sinner

My second installment to my Muertos series is Sinner. Catholics will have differing opinions on the "WORST" sin, however I am having a bit of fun with one of them, Suicide. I was brought up in a Catholic family where taking your life, Gods gift, would be the biggest "spit in his face" action you could take. I was also told that God forgives all, so no matter how you choose to live your life or whatever debauchery you get involved in, your covered in the end. I became an Atheist at 13 and this is only a taste of the hypocrisy that helped make that decision.

I wanted to show the dichotomy " forgiveness no matter what" buy showing the corpse hands with slit wrists, but still wrapped in a Rosary.

Markus and Sarika Wedding Portrait complete

Good after noon all,

I wanted to bring to you the completed illustration of a commission I had originally started back in August. The original was quick drawing of a wedding portrait for (not yet married at the time) Sarika and Markus. I not only wanted to zombify but amplify there nationalities. In case you cant tell, Sarika is Indian and Markus is German. I went with an classic German soldier uniform for Mark, and a quasi-traditional Indian gown for Sarika. I wanted the feel to be as if he had just come out of the service and was wearing his best pressed uniform for the wedding. I love those old 1930's photos of the soldier at his wedding in full uniform, and I believe I captured that vibe. They will be seeing the finished product here for the first as well because they are now living in Germany, so I hope the are happy with it, I know I am.

Cocoon

Sorry for the late post everyone, Cocoon is a drawing that has been sitting in my "need to compete" folder for quite some time and I just haven't gotten around to it. I have been very busy working on commissions and The Kitchen and Muertos that A drawing like Cocoon has been stuck in pause mode. I really do love where this illustration is going, and It does deserve the lime lite so i have decides to show him off. I also added the concept sketch that I drew on a scrap paper one day during lunch.

Poison Ivy homage, 2009

Ivy was a drawing I started working on at this years FanExpo. Being surrounded by comics ( my other obsession, second only to horror films) how could I NOT be inspired to pay homage to one of my favourite DC villains. I always loved the idea that Poison Ivy was so in tuned with nature because she herself was more nature than human. I also have a real love affair with drawing amputee characters and this gave me the opportunity to show off her skeletal structure as twigs and branches. I was going for sexy/creepy and I believe I nailed it! I hope to have her finished very soon, so check back for her progress.

Paranormal Activity, Vault of Horror post.

I want to Re- post a comment that I posted at The Vault of Horror tonight, This was a comment to the negative backlash and negative reviews that has followed the Paranormal Activity world wide release.

Unrealistic feedback if you ask me!

I urge EVERYONE to jump over to B-Sol's post, read it AND the comments. The dialogue is fantastic and I hope you are inspired to comment yourself. Brian puts his whole heart into these posts and he inspires us all, Thanks B.

Let me share my two cents,

Hey B,

I have been quiet for some time, but I had to comment on this! I believe PA suffered from a case of "Phantom Menace syndrome", (I'll explain) the hype machine created by the marketing team birthed such an unreachable goal for this film.(just like Phantom menace, how could there be more JarJar than Darth Maul????)

OBJECTIVE: Make a move seem like the greatest thing since the iphone.

RESULT: the opposite will happen!
With limited release and the "demand it" campaign, PA created such a desire for the WORLD to see this film that when they finally did, the film on screen was not the film they had created in there heads. this movie was destined to be a failure.

Let me explain, When I say failure I say this only agree with B in that the mass public, nu-horor fans, raised on Hostel and saw films ( both of witch I love) went into this movie with the wrong frame of mind. This film did not offer the re-make crazed gore mongers the experience they wanted, the best part, it never said it would! it never claimed to be anything more than it was. My 2 cents, the viewer is to blame for that. If you wanted tits and blood why are you watching a ghost film? no film will WOW everyone but it's not PA fault for ruining your evening! If you don't like a movie, that's fine. But don't yell at a plate of pasta for no tasting like an apple pie.

100th post, Muertos: The Necklace

I can't believe it, 100 posts!

I just want to take a moment to reflect, just over a year of blogging, and here we are at my 100th post. I want to thank everyone for there never ending support. My wife and children, my friends, fans who came to the Festival of Fear and gave me love and kind words. Thanks to my fellow blogger's who never seem to tire of talking about me on there blogs, Zombos' Closet of Horrors, Vault of Horror, The Flying Trilobite, and Everyday is Halloween
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to entertain the boys and ghouls in your world.
I decided that there was no better way to commemorate this day than with the launch of my new series, Muertos. I love Sugar Skulls, and I love the theatrics of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) I am not a religious man so I don't sit around the artifacts of dead family members and pray on Nov 1st and 2nd, or believe that on that special day the souls of the dead return to the altars we have built for them. But I fell in love with the imagery many years ago and it is always been an inspiration for my illustrations. I hope you see the essence of Dia de los Muertos in every illustration.
I started to work on a ZomBear sugar skull last year that is still on hold, but I plan on returning to it with this next series.

"The necklace" is my first illustration from Muertos, and I hope you all like it.

ZomBear of Fatima ReDux

Our ZomBear of Fatima was always one of my favourite illustrations but I always felt I could do more with the black and white version. It has taken me a year but I have finally revisited this illustration. This is Our ZomBear of Fatima ReDux if you will, She is on a different card Stock than the original and is drawn with a lot softer lead and I used much softer half tones and shadows. I think I have finally GOT this drawing but I have attached the other versions for comparison and you can choose your favorite, I hope you enjoy her.

Day 2 of the Infection, Jesus meets his mother

I brought you this illustration a few months ago and with it introduced my Resurrection series. For those of you who are hearing this for the first time I'll back track a bit. I have decided that if Jesus actually rose from the dead on the 3rd day that would make him the worlds most famous zombie. And if he did revisit his disciples and his mother he would be doing so with one need, the need to feed! And we all know what happens to you if you get nibbled on by a zombie.

I have re-posted the original pencil drawing and included the painted version (in it's unfinished state)

This series is a collection of paintings that I feel will tell a far more realistic interpretation of the Christ Resurrection and what happened to those around him after the infection started.
